Clare Swithenbank-Bowman | About Litter4tokens
The aim of Litter4tokens campaign is to instill pride and put respect back into the community by encouraging hard work and in turn help feed and clothe by donations.

Clare Swithenbank-Bowman launched the Litter4tokens campaign at the Ithemba Labasha Community Centre, Shakashead in November 2015.

The campaign not only employs and empowers the nation but cleans up our environment and create a #circular economy for retailers as well as raise awareness of micro plastics in our environment.

The Litter4Tokens campaign builds pride and respect through recycling in several of our communities including KwaDukuza, Etekweni, Hillcrest, Port Elizabeth, East London, Richards Bay, Mpumalanga and Estcourt.

The concept is quite simple; people collect as many bags of litter as they can to get tokens to redeem at the token shop to feed their families. One bag is worth one token and no money changes hands.

FEEDING THE NATION AND PREVENTING THE LITTER FROM BEING DUMPED IN OUR RIVERS AND OCEANS.

With bags and equipment supplied by PETCO, Litter4Tokens not only creates jobs, but infuses pride for the environment and the cleanliness of their communities while at the same time uplifting people through education about recycling. Consequently, less litter is dumped in the rivers and ultimately reaching the ocean.

“Every year worldwide, more than 300 million tons of plastics are produced, half of which is designed for single use, and each year, at least 8 million tons end up in our oceans. These plastics break down with the intervention of microbes into carbon dioxide, methane and water into dangerous micro plastics” – European Union
